T1 Prices can vary from state to state, the simplest answer is that it is all in the loop. T1s have an actual wire that pretty much runs from the customer’s installation location to the carrier’s nearest internet POP (Point of Presence).
This loop is mileage sensitive in terms of distance from the customer location’s serving ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchang Carrier) Central Office (CO) to the carrier POP. It is mileage sensitive both in terms of availability for certain carriers as well as cost. Different carriers break costs out in different ways.
Some go actual mileage. Some go for flat rates in certain mileage groups.. like 0 – 5 and then 5 – 10, etc. Others are flat rated for say anything under 25 miles and then move up from there. Other circuit structures are pure hit or miss. If that CO is ‘lit’… you get your product and price… if not, you need to go with another carrier option.
For a customer near an internet POP of a specific carrier… or for the hit or miss circuit structure of Telnes On-Net as well as products from COVAD, New Edge, Megapath and others… you get the lower cost options in the $299 – $379 or so range.
When outside those territories… you move more to the mileage based carriers. When you start moving beyond 25 miles from a POP… or certainly 50 miles form the POP… your costs start to increase astronomically on the loop portion.

With more and more users connecting to the Internet via wireless 3g broadband, the question is, will we ditch DSL and go wireless?
I have to admit that I find myself using my blackberry pearl to surf the web just as much as I use my laptop to connect to the Internet these days.
Now don’t get me wrong I wont be ditching my computer all together for my mobile phone but as speeds get faster and smart phones become more user friendly you have to think that wireless broadband is the future.
T-mobile has introduced the G1 with Google and At&t the fastest iphone yet with 3g so you have to assume that with Cheap cell phone plans and more players entering the wireless Internet market, you have to believe that DSL providers are facing stiff competition not only from satellite and cable Internet but from the wireless revolution.
